The rest of the Oak, like after the confluence, were high water fishable by at least this past Sunday thru about yesterday as the overflow levels diminished. No significant icing on any waterway. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. Same set up as the night before. Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Mexico Bay has seen an invasion of salmon. The last few weeks out of Bald Eagle Marina we have been fishing offshore as there has been some good steelhead action with a few teenage kings in the mix. The last shot of rain was Sunday and theres been some cooler weather for the beginning part of this week. Then again who would have guessed thered be a few days in the end of March this cold! If an angler is fishing upstream, they should fish downstream of the other angler or consider fishing another day. Flows in the Oak have retreated some to slightly high and slightly stained. Careful and hardy drifters have hooked up on some bright steelhead. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. Flows in the smaller area waterways should continue to drop from around moderate maybe going toward low and clear. So, flows, weather and fishing action are somewhat up and down. Strong upstream headwater supplies are likely driving the water feed below the dam. Other area smaller tribs east and west are coming back into slightly high and stained flows. In subsequent years ahead when runs are made up of multiple year classes of fish the returns and fishing prospects could be even better! Well start out with a warmup and rain or showers then a quick transition to much colder and snow or snow showers Fri/Sat. More tributary anglers are invited to help with feeding the fish and cleaning the pens. Try trolling straight out from Sodus Bay west to Ontario searching for kings down 50 over 150 fow. Bass fishing in Sodus has been excellent. Its unknown if flows will stay as low as I saw today on recon, but likely flows will remain real low or optimistically may go up to less low. There are now very small spurts of kings coming through. Flows are actually up just a bit from earlier in the week when the visibility was less. After a few decent runs, the fish was starting to cooperate That was until it got to the back of the boat. For now on the Oak, anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. They also caught their biggest king at 27-1/2 pounds. Most all fish in real nice shape, some legit fresh Kings after the last rain which isnt always a sure thing in our area low gradient tribs. Fish have been taking mostly spoons with a few meat and flasher/fly mixed in. Rivermouth action has been slow to start but might be picking up as near shore waters cooled down a touch after couple days of med E winds. Look for angling pressure to build likely toward this weekend. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. With the flows observed today anglers should be able to cover all the fishy water pretty effectively. Fishing pressure is down all around, especially in the Oak. They can be found in Lake Ontario, its tributaries like the Oak Orchard River and in numerous inland waterways. You can lay a rod down on the bank or net a fish or walk around a wading obstruction for safety but anglers cannot be on the Archers Club grounds on the dates not included above. We dropped our port rigger down and within 5 minutes we hooked up on a 18 lb king. Flows in the Oak, and really all around, are looking pretty good by winter time steelhead standards. Capt. Get the drift or swing down and checked and slowed a bit and you can find a head shaking steelhead on the take. Some guys reported a good push of browns yesterday on both the Oak and Sandy. Fish as soon as reasonable conditions allow instead of waiting for supposed better conditions that may or may not materialize. It might take lots of bobber watching or a few cast and retrieve/swing presentations to hook up on a post spawn brown or staging steelhead. Brown trout like this rutted out nice fish are eager strikers and you might encounter steelhead, salmon, lakers or bass. Sorry it took so long! For the Oak, this latest spate of water should bring on the bulk of the King action with some spawning underway no doubt under the cover of the higher and dirtier water flows. Still lots of water in the Oak at slightly high and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. Warm temps are forecast today and tomorrow and seasonable thru the beginning part of the weekend. March 2020 steelhead chrome action on the Oak! On Saturday there were bass boats fishing on the south side next to the Port Gibson bridge. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Downstream spots on the Oak for the past weekend may have been tougher on what was dropping and clearing flows, although we did not hear from many guys. Back on the retreat thru today after a cold night. We hooked a lot of fish both days. Guys are getting hook ups daily. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. We had higher then average Fall water flows previously and theres good likelihood well have higher then average late Winter water flows in the near future or even thru the Spring. Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. Canal feed should be continued there so if we find out any intel for that we will pass along. Those waterways do seem to be slowly back on the retreat. Longer range forecast is chance of cold again after that with another snowstorm for end next week. Temps are cooler here then points south and more rain or showers are expected at least thru tomorrow.
